Moscow Radisson Royal Hotel Tour - Business Insider

moscow radisson hotel tour

Dylan Love

When I saw where I'd be staying for the International Conference on Quantum Technologies in Moscow, I didn't even think it was a hotel.

Skip straight to the photos >

The Radisson Royal Hotel is located on the bank of the Moscow River and it's a downright imposing building, looking more like a house of worship than a place for tourists to sleep off their vodka hangovers.

Formerly called the Hotel Ukraina, it's one of Moscow's "Seven Sisters," a collection of seven majestic buildings constructed between 1947 and 1953.

The locals call them?Stalinskie Vysotki, or "Stalinist Skyscrapers."

At 650 feet tall, the Radisson is the second-largest of the seven and it's home to 34 stories of luxury. It boasts 505 single bedrooms and 38 suites.

Here's what it looks like inside.

Welcome to the Moscow Radisson!

Here's the lobby ? opulent columns, marble floors, and atmospheric chandeliers.

Back behind the lobby, though...

...is a painstakingly detailed scale diorama of Moscow!

Right about this time, a burly security guard told me I couldn't take any more pictures of the lobby. Sounds like a great time to check out the room. Let's head up the stairs...

...and onto the elevator...

My room is right down this hallway.

Here's home sweet home for the next few days ? room 0742.

Upon entering, you put your keycard into this slot by the door to activate the lights.

The light switches will only work with the keycard in that slot.

This is just about the most inviting thing a jet lagged traveler can see.

Here's the view looking back at the door. More on that large white cabinet momentarily.

What says "hotel hospitality" like bedside chocolate?

When in Russia, you gotta watch Russia Today.

There's a modest snack bar with some champagne.

...and a well-stocked minibar, you've got all the makings of a party.

After a look at these prices, I think I'll be passing.

Want room service? Fill out this card that promises to "feed [your] soul."

Here's where I set up Business Insider's Moscow headquarters.

Forget those cardboard doorknob hangers ? this hotel uses tassels.

The housekeeping staff folded and organized my dirty clothes for me.

If you're running out of clean clothes, the Radisson is happy to do your laundry for a fee.

Smokers: the hotel has you covered!

The window offers a view of the roof deck.

And you can catch a sight of the very lovely courtyard.

It makes for a nice spot to unwind with a friend at the end of the day.

The bathroom includes a bidet for the especially hygiene-conscious.

There's all order of soaps and lotions to use.

But don't even think about wearing it outside the room.

We appreciated the magnifying mirror for facial hair maintenance.

After a long day of strolling around Moscow, this shower was divine.

Water pressure abounds, baby!

If you slip in the tub, you can yank this cord to get help.

Back to the large white cabinet ? let's unlock it.

Inside is a safe for storing any valuables you want to keep securely out of sight.

The other side has a spot to hang your shirts and includes extra bed linens.

Below that you can grab some slippers.

Hopefully you never need to use the fire escape plan.

That said, let's go explore Moscow.

Maybe you're hungry for a Big Mac.

U-T San Diego reports 36-year-old Byron?Frisch was charged along with three others with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud.

Frisch and others are accused of submitting false information to obtain more than $50 million worth of life insurance policies for unqualified applicants who didn't plan to pay the policy premiums. Authorities say they received more than $1.6 million and the ability to sell the policies to investors.

The four allegedly recruited elderly individuals to apply for purported free life insurance policies with million-dollar death benefits, then submitted applications with false details.

Frisch, a self-employed financial adviser, played for Tennessee Titans, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers.

Ohio killer set for execution found hanged in cell

(AP) ? A man condemned to death for fatally stabbing a neighbor during a Cleveland burglary was found hanged in his cell Sunday just days before his Wednesday execution.

Billy Slagle, 44, was found at about 5 a.m. at the Chillicothe Correctional Institution south of Columbus and was declared dead within the hour, prison spokeswoman JoEllen Smith said.

"He was in his cell alone. No other inmates suspected to be involved," Smith said in an email. "It does appear to be a suicide."

Under regular prison policy, he was scheduled to be placed under pre-execution watch Sunday morning but "was not yet placed under constant watch," Smith said.

Slagle was sentenced to die for the 1987 stabbing of Mari Anne Pope, who was killed while two young children she was watching were in the house.

In a rare move, the prosecutor in Cleveland asked the Ohio Parole Board to spare Slagle. Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim McGinty said jurors today, with the option of life without parole, would be unlikely to sentence Slagle to death.

The parole board and Gov. John Kasich both rejected mercy for Slagle.

Last week, Slagle's attorney argued that a jury never got the chance to hear the full details of his troubled childhood.

The attorneys, arguing for a new trial and to delay his execution, said that information met requirements for asking for a new trial, which normally must happen within four months of a conviction.

Slagle was "unavoidably prevented" from filing his request because his original attorneys didn't develop and present the evidence, the filing said.

McGinty and Slagle's attorneys had cited his age ? at 18, he was barely old enough for execution in Ohio ? and his history of alcohol and drug addiction.

Discarded NYC theater prop sparks bomb scare

NEW YORK (AP) ? A New York City playwright who directed a show called the "American Suicide Bomber Association" unwitting sparked a bomb scare when he threw a prop from the production into the trash at his home.

Playwright Ethan Fishbane tells The New York Post (http://bit.ly/16Pymas ) he wasn't thinking when he discarded the fake bomb while cleaning out his Manhattan apartment Tuesday.

A building superintendent saw the prop the next morning and called police.

That brought out the bomb squad.

It didn't take long for investigators to figure out what had happened.

Fishbane says he was stunned when officers knocked on his door, but he praised the department for its quick response, saying it was "wholly appropriate."

The 23-year-old wrote the play while attending New York University's Tisch School of The Arts.

FDA links stomach bug in 2 states to Mexican farm

(AP) ? The Food and Drug Administration says an outbreak of stomach illnesses in Iowa and Nebraska is linked to salad mix served at Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants in those states and supplied by a Mexican farm.

The outbreak of cyclospora infections has sickened more than 400 people in 16 states. The agency says it is working to determine whether the salad mix is the source of illnesses in the other 14 states.

"It is not yet clear whether the cases reported from other states are all part of the same outbreak," the agency said in a statement. "The investigation of increased cases of cyclosporiasis in other states continues."

The FDA traced illnesses from the restaurants to Taylor Farms de Mexico, a processor of food service salads.

The agency said its investigation has not implicated packaged salad sold in grocery stores.

The salad mix may be out of the commercial food chain as the most recent known illness in those two states was in Nebraska a month ago. The typical shelf life for a salad mix is up to 14 days.

There have been more recent illnesses in other states. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the most recent illness was July 23.

The Wrist & Repetitive Strain Injuries | Hand Therapy & Occupational ...

The wrist joins the hand to the forearm. It is able to move forward and back, side-to-side, and in circular movements. This variety of motion allows the hand to reach objects and function in a wide range of motion. In addition, a strong and stable wrist is important during grip activities. The wrist is a complex joint where the two long bones of the forearm meet the eight small carpal bones of the wrist. These carpal bones are essentially arranged in two rows of 4 bones. The eight small wrist bones then meet the five long finger bones in the palm of the hand. Most of the muscles that move the wrist, fingers and thumb are located in the forearm. The tendons (the cords that connect muscle to bone) that bend and straighten the wrist and the fingers must cross through the wrist joint on their way from the elbow towards the hand. Many of the repetitive strain injuries associated with computer work occur at the wrist. In fact, according to the National Occupation Research Agenda for Musculoskeletal Disorders, the most frequently reported upper-extremity musculoskeletal disorders affect the hand and wrist region.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the most commonly diagnosed nerve injury in the arm. The nerves are the power cords for the arms, providing strength to the muscles and sensation to areas of skin. Carpal tunnel syndrome is the compression of the median nerve as the wrist as it passes from the neck to the fingers. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can cause pain at the base of the hand and in the bulky muscles in the palm right below where the thumb meets the palm. Also, people often say they feel as if they have a tight band around their wrists. Numbness in the thumb, index and middle fingers is common. The pain may feel as if it is traveling up the arm and into the shoulder and neck

Pain where the thumb meets the wrist may be caused by a tendinitis of the muscles that pull the thumb back (as if you were hitchhiking). People who type tensely are prone to developing this tendinitis as they hold their thumbs over the keyboard with tension. Pain at the base of the thumb can also be caused by arthritis in the joint where the long palm bone meets one of the tiny wrist bones of the thumb.

Tendinitis of the wrist and finger flexors (the bending/closing muscles) and extensors (the straightning muscles) and benign ganglion cysts also occur fairly frequently at the wrist.

RSI Prevention

  • Maintain a neutral wrist position.
    • The wrist should be flat in relationship to the forearm; it should not be bent forward or back.
    • For each 15 degrees that the wrist is out of alignment, the pressure on the median nerve increases.
    • The middle finger should be in alignment with the forearm, not angled toward the thumb or the small finger.
    • Wrist supports can provide proper positioning during the night.
    • Do not fight against a wrist support. It is better to remove the brace and perform activities carefully than to wear a brace that prevents necessary movement.
    • Softer, neoprene braces without the rigidity provide support but also allow for some movement and may be a better choice is the task requires wrist movement.
    • Using a wrist brace can cause the body to compensate for loss of motion by moving the elbows differently. Monitor for a shift in pain symptoms in other body areas.
  • Ergonomics
    • Using a split keyboard can align the wrists into a more neutral position.
    • Try a negative tilt of the keyboard where the row of keys closest to you is slightly higher than the row farthest away.
    • The keyboard height should allow the wrists to be neutral while the shoulders are relaxed and the elbows are open slightly greater than 90 degrees.
    • Use the upper arm to manipulate the mouse. Do not activate the mouse by using side-to-side movements of the wrist.
    • The mouse should be located by the keyboard. Do not reach forward to activate the mouse positioned on a different level than the keyboard or positioned out of easy reach.
    • Keep the fingers and thumb relaxed on the keyboard. Use only the minimum necessary force to activate the keys. Do not float the fingers stiffly over the keyboard.

How MOOCs Can Help India

Image: DAVID DESPAU

Digital technologies have the potential to dramatically transform Indian higher education. A new model built around massive open online courses (MOOCs) that are developed locally and combined with those provided by top universities abroad could deliver higher education on a scale and at a quality not possible before.

University enrollment in India is huge and growing. It surpassed the U.S.'s enrollment in 2010 and became second only to China that year. Every day in India 5,000 students enroll at a university and 10 new institutions open their doors.

At more than 3 percent of the country's GDP, India's spending on higher education is one of the highest in the world. Yet per-student spending is among the lowest. While recent expansion has widened access to universities, it has further reduced per-student spending and aggravated already acute faculty shortages. As a result, quality has declined.

India must continue to expand access to higher education while preserving quality and reducing costs. This situation is not unique to India, but given its enormous size and unique position, India's challenges are formidable. Digital technologies, particularly the extensive use of MOOCs, could help.

India has experimented with online classes before, but their impact has been marginal. A decade ago the country began using the Internet to distribute video and Web-based courses under a government-funded program, the National Program on Technology Enhanced Learning. Developers created more than 900 courses, focused mainly on science and engineering, with about 40 hours of instruction each. With limited interactivity and uneven quality, these courses failed to attract a large body of students.

MOOCs have given Indian academics a better sense of how a lecture could be restructured into short, self-contained segments with high interactivity to engage students more effectively. Plans are afoot for the Indian Institutes of Technology, widely considered to be among the world's top engineering schools, to offer three basic IT courses in data structure, programming and algorithms to hundreds of thousands of undergraduates through MOOCs. These courses would award credits and count toward degrees.

It helps that India is full of young people who possess a high comfort level with technology. Indians are among the most aggressive users of MOOCs. Of the 2.9 million registered users of Coursera in March, more than 250,000 were from India, second only to those from the U.S.

Yet we still need to find the right model to use MOOCs in an Indian context. With a decade of experience in this space and a vibrant technology ecosystem, India will most likely find its way soon.

AT&T to launch international plan exclusively for those studying abroad

If you're a student or teacher looking to expand your horizons in foreign lands this coming semester, the last thing you need is an astronomical phone bill thanks to those nasty roaming charges. AT&T aims to lend a helping hand with a new international roaming plan designed exclusively for those participating in study abroad programs. Launching August 9th, the plan consists of two packages -- the $60 a month option includes 250 minutes, 250 outgoing messages and 250MB of data, while the $90 option gives you 400 minutes, 400 outgoing messages and 400MB of data plus 1GB of hotspot use on qualifying devices. It's still not exactly cheap, but the Study Abroad plan is a decent option if you want to keep your existing AT&T number as you go globetrotting. That said, we'd encourage you to look for slightly more affordable alternatives before you flex that passport.

Divergence In Official And HSBC China PMI - Business Insider

We just got the official and HSBC China PMI numbers, and both are painting different pictures of the nation's manufacturing sector.

Official PMI climbed to 50.3 in July, beating expectations, while HSBC PMI fell to 47.7, in line with expectations.

Bank of America's Ting Lu explains that the divergence in the official and HSBC Flash PMI readings could be driven by seasonal factors and the survey samples for each. The HSBC Flash PMI represents 85 - 90% of the respondents to the survey:

"First, the decline of flash HSBC PMI, which was conducted in mid-July, was likely impacted by the prolonged pessimistic sentiment as a result of the interbank turmoil in June and the uncertainty regarding the new government's growth floor (or even worry of an engineered hard landing as part of the so called ?Li Keqiang Economics?). However, since mid-July Premier Li has made it very clear that his government will try to achieve the 7.5% growth target with some policy easing measures including more investment in infrastructure FAI. So the official PMI survey which was conducted late July could be impacted by the more positive sentiment.

"Second, the HSBC PMI sample is overly represented by small exporters which were hit by rising RMB, rising wage and sluggish global demand. However, the official PMI is more represented by domestic big enterprises with large exposure to FAI. The improved sentiment will surely support the official PMI."

The other logical question that follows is which number investors should pay attention to. And Lu writes that we should focus on the official number, since the HSBC survey is more exposed to exporters, and "exports now only contribute 10% of China's GDP."

This chart from SocGen, which does not reflect the data for July, shows the difference in the trajectory of the HSBC and official PMI:

Monsoon Wedding director Mira Nair boycotts Israel film festival

Mira Nair, the internationally-acclaimed director of Salaam Bombay! and Monsoon Wedding, has refused an invitation to take her latest film to Israel, citing the Palestinian call for cultural boycott.

In a series of tweets today, Nair made the following statement:

I was just invited to Israel as a guest of honor at the Haifa International Film Festival with ?The Reluctant Fundamentalist.? I will not be going to Israel at this time. I will go to Israel when the walls come down. I will go to Israel when occupation is gone. I will go to Israel when the state does not privilege one religion over another. I will go to Israel when Apartheid is over. I will go to Israel, soon. I stand with the [Palestinian Campaign] for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) and the larger Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) Movement.

Sony Pictures Wins 'Midnight in Paris' Lawsuit Over Faulkner Quote (Exclusive)

Courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics

"Midnight in Paris"

A federal judge in Mississippi declared victory on Thursday for Sony Pictures in a lawsuit brought by the owners of the rights to the literary works of the late William Faulkner.

The lawsuit contended that the film distributor violated Faulkner's copyright and the Lanham Act by allowing a character in Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris to quote a passage from Faulkner?s Requiem for a Nun.

Sony argued that the use was de minimis and a "fair use."

After thanking the attorneys for not asking him to compare The Sound and the Fury with? Sharknado, U.S. District Judge Michael Mills agrees.

Midnight in Paris features a protagonist played by Owen Wilson who travels to Paris and finds himself spending time with literary greats including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and Gertrude Stein.

In the film, Wilson describes his fantastic experiences. He says, ?The past is not dead! Actually, it's not even past. You know who said that? Faulkner. And he was right. And I met him, too. I ran into him at a dinner party.?

In Requiem for a Nun, Faulkner wrote, "The past is never dead. It?s not even past."

In his ruling (read in full here), the judge analyzes the various factors that comprise a fair use to see whether Sony's exploitation of Faulkner's passage was legitimate.

In terms of the purpose and character of the use, the judge notes "the copyrighted work is a serious piece of literature lifted for use in a speaking part in a movie comedy, as opposed to a printed portion of a novel printed in a newspaper, or a song?s melody sampled in another song. This transmogrification in medium tips this factor in favor of transformative, and thus, fair use."

As for the substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work, the Faulkner literary estate attempted to argue that the "Quote describes the essence of Requiem," and as such deserved some extra credit for its qualitative importance.

But the judge responds, "Qualitative importance to society of a nine-word quote is not the same as qualitative importance to the originating work as a whole. Moreover, it should go without saying that the quote at issue is of miniscule quantitative importance to the work as a whole. Thus, the court considers both the qualitative and quantitative analyses to tip in favor of fair use."

Judge Mills is also doubtful that the market for Faulkner's work is going to be harmed by Midnight in Paris, and in fact theorizes that is more likely "the film indeed helped the plaintiff and the market value of Requiem if it had any effect at all."

For all of those reasons and more, the court's conclusion is that "no substantial similarity exists between the copyrighted work and the allegedly infringing work, and Sony?s use in this matter was de minimis. The use is not actionable, and this claim is dismissed."

STORY: Sony Sued Over William Faulkner Quote in 'Midnight in Paris'?

The judge adds that neither a literary allusion, the name Faukner nor a short paraphrase "can possibly be said to confuse an audience as to an affiliation between Faulkner and Sony. Allusion is not synonymous with affiliation, nor with appropriation. Faulkner has not provided any precedent suggesting that the mere use of a celebrity name in an artistic work somehow rises to the level of deception."

And the judge adds that Sony's First Amendment protection outweighs any Lanham Act claim that the movie misled viewers into believing there was an endorsement or connection with the Faulkner estate.

Faulkner Literary Rights, LLC also brought a claim for commercial misappropriation -- which is akin to a publicity rights charge -- but this is a state-based claim, so the federal court declines to exercise jurisdiction over it. It's possible that a new lawsuit will be brought in Mississippi state court that alleges that the film misappropriated Faulkner's identity by use of the quote, but for now, the lawsuit over the literary past is dead, notwithstanding what the famed American author believes about the past.

GM says new data centers will improve vehicles, margins

By Deepa Seetharaman

WARREN, Michigan (Reuters) - General Motors Co said it is investing $546 million in two new Michigan data centers in hopes it will free up millions of dollars to boost vehicle quality more quickly.

The largest U.S. automaker unveiled a $288 million data center in the Detroit suburb of Warren on Monday, which went online in January. Construction of a $258 million companion center at the GM vehicle proving grounds in Milford, Michigan, will begin this summer.

GM officials said the centers will help engineers to spot and solve problems more quickly than when it outsourced about 90 percent of its information technology (IT) needs.

"We had five, six key suppliers of IT services and each one of them had their own little control center, and we couldn't see any of what was going on in our network," Chief Executive Dan Akerson told reporters at a media event in Warren.

"Today we can look into our plants, our production, where supply chain is a problem or an asset," said Akerson.

In the next five years, GM aims to bring 90 percent of its IT work within the company. The two new data centers will get new vehicle designs and technologies to consumers faster and boost the company's bottom line, the company said.

By 2015, when the Milford center is scheduled to be operational, GM will have reduced its IT facilities to two from 23, company officials said.

A number of GM's competitors outsource about one-third of their IT functions, GM Chief Information Officer Randy Mott said.

"When we started this journey, we were the most outsourced," Mott said. "I think we'll end on the side of being the least outsourced ... We're coming down kind of full swing back."

The Milford center will be about 40 miles from the Warren facility and each will be able to serve as a backup if the other goes down with technical problems, GM said.

The value of the IT equipment for each of the centers is expected to be about $158 million.

GM said it has outsourced the bulk of its computing and IT functions in recent years, which was more costly and not as effective as the two data centers. Akerson said the company was spending between $1 billion and $2.5 billion on "shadow IT" services to back up its suppliers.

GM officials said employees around the world will be able to get access to the super-computing abilities of the two data centers.

It will also cut costs on crash tests, it said. Simulations by computer will generate data that will help in designing safer vehicles and save $350,000 for each crash test avoided, GM said.

Suppliers making tooling for GM vehicles in development will be paid quicker and allow them to prioritize deliver of critical parts, which may reduce engineering expenses by millions of dollars, GM said.

GM was able to get a return of 20 times its IT investment for one particular project to improve its global warranty process and speed up how fast it spots and fixes problems, said Tim Cox, chief information officer of GM's development services.

The data centers will allow engineers to do many of these kind of projects, Cox said.

Watch Reddit's New Adorably Awesome YouTube Series ?Explain Like I'm Five?

Screen shot 2013-03-19 at 7.52.55 AMMove over cat videos, YouTube has a new series that’ll satisfy our need for midday adorableness and make us smarter. “Explain Like I’m Five” is a new web series from the wildly popular content aggregator, Reddit, that explains topics, such as existentialism and the Syrian war, through giggly conversations with five year olds. Watch the first episode on Nietzsche’s existentialism, below The hybrid of animation and live-action narration is part of a broader experiment in creating original YouTube videos out of Reddit’s most popular content. That YouTube is sponsoring (i.e. paying for) the videos is likely related to its previous $100 million foray into original premium content. In the past, YouTube selected top-notch creative talent, such as The Office‘s Rainn Wilson. YouTube appears to be taking the opposite approach with Reddit, creating multimedia content out of what’s already popular. While the videos don’t move beyond the basic facts about each topic, the material is memorable enough that I’ll probably actually remember it. Indeed, it was Einstein who said, “If you can’t explain it to a six year old, you don’t understand it yourself.”

World stocks up a day after Dow hits record high

BANGKOK (AP) ? The Dow's new all-time high and better economic data from the United States propelled world stock markets higher Wednesday.

Markets continued to shrug off a budget impasse in Washington. Automatic government budget cuts took effect Friday after President Barack Obama and Congress failed to reach a budget deal. Economists expect the $85 billion in cuts to hurt U.S. economic growth.

European shares added to gains reaped a day earlier, when the Dow posted a new record. Britain's FTSE 100 rose 0.2 percent to 6,446.43. Germany's DAX advanced 0.4 percent to 7,903.70. France's CAC-40 added 0.3 percent to 3,798.04.

Wall Street showed no signs of slowing, with Dow Jones industrial futures rising 0.3 percent to 14,272. S&P 500 futures gained 0.3 percent to 1,541.80.

Japan's benchmark index reached a multi-year closing high, capping a day of positive trade in Asia. The Nikkei 225 jumped 2.1 percent to close at 11,932.27, the highest finish since September 2008.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng added 1 percent to 22,777.84. South Korea's Kospi rose 0.2 percent to 2,020.74. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 advanced 0.8 percent to 5,116.80. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia and mainland China rose.

Analysts said markets were taking their cues from Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke, who has overseen a campaign of massive bond-buying to support the world's biggest economy after the 2008 financial crisis. The issuance of bonds has pushed their prices down, steering investors toward stocks. The program known as "quantitative easing" is in its third phase, which is dubbed QE3.

"The lesson is clear. Don't bet on Capitol Hill. Bet on Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke instead. To be sure, it was Bernanke's reassurance, as last week's congressional testimonies on monetary policy, to keep QE3 on its present course that turned a worried stock market into a record high," said analysts at DBS Bank Ltd. in Singapore.

Ric Spooner, chief market analyst at CMC Markets in Sydney, said the new highs reached on Wall Street provided a psychological boost to investors but that such gains can go into reverse pretty quickly.

"From the big picture point of view, there is a lot of risk in either direction for the stock market at the moment," he said. "But we could quite easily continue rising, given how low interest rates are."

Among individual stocks, troubled Japanese electronics maker Sharp Corp. soared 14.1 percent after South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. said it will invest 10.4 billion yen ($112 million) in Sharp to secure a supply of large-size LCD panels. Samsung gained 0.7 percent.

Benchmark oil for April delivery was up 7 cents to $90.88 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 70 cents to close at $90.82 a barrel on the Nymex on Tuesday, hours after the death of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, whose country sits on the world's second-largest oil reserves, after Saudi Arabia.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.3050 from $1.3040 late Tuesday in New York. The dollar rose to 93.42 yen from 93.29 yen.

Wall Street climbs; S&P closes at five-year high?

13 hrs.

Stocks closed?the?trading?day?higher, pushing the Standard & Poor's 500 index to another five-year high, after strong reports on housing starts and unemployment claims made investors more optimistic about the U.S. economy.?

The S&P 500 gained eight points to close at 1,480 Thursday, its highest level since December 2007.?

The Dow Jones industrial average also rose, gaining 84 points to 13,596. The Nasdaq composite rose 18 points to 3,136.?

"Having consolidated really for the last two weeks, the fact that we broke out, I think that that's sucking in quite a bit of money," said James Dailey, portfolio manager of TEAM Asset Strategy Fund in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.?

In the housing sector, PulteGroup Inc shares gained 4.9 percent to $20.29 and Toll Brothers Inc advanced 3.1 percent to $35.99.?

Bank of America's fourth-quarter profit fell as it took more charges to clean up mortgage-related problems. Citigroup posted $2.32 billion of charges for layoffs and lawsuits.?

The S&P financial sector index slipped 0.14 percent as the only one of the 10 major S&P sectors to decline.?

S&P 500 earnings are expected to have risen 2.3 percent in the fourth quarter, Thomson Reuters data showed. Expectations for the quarter have fallen considerably since October when a 9.9 percent gain was estimated.?

It?s Better To Be Raised by a Single Mom

A few months ago, social scientist W. Bradford Wilcox insisted in Slate that it?s worse to be raised by a single mother even if you?re not poor. Children of single mothers, he argued, are more likely to end up as pregnant teens, or in jail, or otherwise in trouble. For centuries Wilcox?s has been the common view. But in an age when single motherhood is becoming more common, these mothers (and social science research) are starting to challenge that view. In fact, some believe that in an era when children are coddled and dependent for way too long, being a child of a single parent has distinct advantages.

Readers, we invite you to submit your testimonies on why being raised by a single mother, or being a single mother, has its benefits and might even be better than having both parents around. Send your essays to doublex.slate@gmail.com and write ?single mother? in the subject line. (Please check out our submission guidelines.) We will choose the best ones and run them on the blog. We?d love to hear from single dads and boys raised by single mothers, too.

If the forms ask, I check off the box that says ?head of the household.? Gender: female. Eyes: brown. Occupation: queen. Queen of the castle. If there were a moat, it would be my moat. I would orchestrate all activities in the moat. Canoe races, water aerobics, turtle hunting, you know. This year marks the 10th that I have held such an esteemed domestic status. One decade. My first milestone.

When couples celebrate their 10th anniversary, they might buy important jewelry and give it to each other to wear. Sometimes they surprise each other and hide the jewels under napkins or in soup bowls. That?s because a decade is a long time, a long time to share towels and make compromises and most often raise kids. In marital circles, it is an accomplishment. In unmarital circles, OK, in my unmarital circle, a decade of parenting?alone, without the relationship part?is not an accomplishment. It is a Sisyphean feat. It is like jogging to Uzbekistan. Or deciphering the human genome. I am going to buy a ruby and bake it into a cake and forget that I did it and give it to myself. Surprise! Happy anniversary!

Ten years ago, I was not as ebullient, fearing the logistics, mainly, of my new arrangement?making house payments, changing filters in the attic, getting to soccer practices and ballet without splitting my body in half surgically. The apprehension was warranted; the details have been hard. I worried less, though, that my two daughters, now teenagers, would grow up as well as they would have had a proper father lived in their house. Now, I see that they have grown up with so much more. More than, I daresay, their peers from two-parent families have. Hence, the ruby in the cake.

Kids of unmarried parents, according to all of those studies (of rich moms and poor, educated moms and not-so), are supposed to be failures. They are supposed to abuse drugs, get pregnant, and end up in prison rather than grad school. One-fourth of them are supposed to experience the kind of emotional havoc that renders them useless forever. There is of course no data suggesting that these particular kids might have had similar paths regardless of the number of adults sleeping down the hall. But beyond that there is also the beauty that emerges from the strain, the impediments, even the sometimes terrifying knowledge that their parents might fail them. No single mom wants to fail them?provide less, teach less, support less, be less?but it is in our minds that we might. So we struggle, and over the long term, we impart to our children that struggle can be good. This is something they know intimately.

First, the easy lessons: money. Work hard for it. Save it. Choose what to spend it on. My kids have seen me write for a living at home, tutor, teach classes, and sew purses at the kitchen table so that I could be available to them after school. They know that I could earn more as a ?regular? employee, but they?ve figured out how to assess the value of each option and of other things. They never ask for anything that costs a lot. They thank me for making dinner each night. When they were in elementary school, they put $124.58 in an envelope and gave it to me. It was everything that they had saved. I took one of the dollars and wrote on it: ?This is my birthday present from my wonderful daughters who are selfless and sincere and my very special comrades.? I gave the rest back to them and told them not to ever worry. The bill is in a frame on a bookshelf by my desk.

Growing up in a house of girls, they?ve learned about independence, about teamwork, about climbing on ladders and lifting couches and fixing (OK, attempting to fix) leaky shower faucets. We have a tool box. We have a grill. (We also have a plumber if we need him.) Looking at the gear in my car trunk, a mechanic once asked if I was a gym teacher. Female strength is worth nurturing, and it just happens organically in an all-gal house.

Certainly, kids from two-parent families can cultivate these values from other contexts. But the real rough stuff is harder to duplicate. During a two-year period, process-servers pounded on our door during dinnertime. Once they pushed envelopes at us as we left ballet school on a day parents were invited to visit classes. Another time they ambushed us as we walked to the driveway to get into the car. The kids were young, so I made up stories: someone trying to sell us roofing services, someone mistaking me for someone else. When my daughters were in elementary school, I went to court for five different lawsuits, ultimately representing myself. When they were old enough, I told them the truth about where I had been. I told them about integrity, morality, and honesty and the difference between emotion and reason. I told them about the boyfriends they would one day have and the qualities that they should look for in a mate.

There is power in the negative example, and my kids have witnessed it first hand. They have felt the rancor, lived for a time in the forbidden middle. Yet they have learned and have emerged with the kind of human insight that will serve them well?the kind of insight I wish I had had before making a bad choice. Instead of hiding things, I started conversations about options, self-knowledge, trust. As a result, my daughters know how to make decisions for themselves and advocate for their needs.

Before the divorce, we lived just six blocks away in a large house, a fancy French-style manse that made me feel as if I were living in someone else?s house. After, to avoid a change in schools, we moved into one of the neighborhood?s original stone cottages, which is about one-fifth the size of our former home. It is charming and solid, though it needs a new roof and front path and bathroom vanity, testaments to the pressure of income, the continual weighing of worth. What?s a tight corner, anyway, when there is hardwood under the kitchen linoleum and college tuitions ahead. The girls would learn about value, and craft, and history, yes, they would. I, having already learned about value, and craft, and history, would find meaning in how the freezer door handle hit the wall.

We are surrounded by huge homes and the other accouterments of wealth. Kids here, and in similar bubbles of affluence, find gift-wrapped cars in the driveway when they turn 16, as well as one of the greatest predictors of success: support. In the recently published How Children Succeed, author Paul Tough argues that rich kids get the encouragement and poor ones get the grit, and he claims that one without the other gets no one very far. It is hard to spot the millionaire?s kid who mows the lawn or the middle-schooler on a free-lunch program who sees his parents before nine at night. I would maintain that children with a single parent get the winning combination.

A few summers ago, we held a tag sale on our front yard. I could have had the items picked up for donation, but the extra cash was helpful at the time. A little boy, about 5, made a beeline for my kids? old soccer jerseys and, in minutes, had collected matching shorts, shin guards, and a pair of cleats. When his dad took out his wallet, my daughters did not want to accept his money. They told him it was a gift. A few days later, they started a charity that collects and distributes athletic shoes to kids who need them. They?ve given away hundreds of pairs.
