Multi-wavelength view of radio galaxy Hercules A

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Spectacular jets powered by the gravitational energy of a supermassive black hole in the core of the elliptical galaxy Hercules A illustrate the combined imaging power of two of astronomy's cutting-edge tools, the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Camera 3, and the recently upgraded Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope in New Mexico.

Some two billion light-years away, the yellowish elliptical galaxy in the center of the image appears quite ordinary as seen by Hubble in visible wavelengths of light. The galaxy is roughly 1,000 times more massive than our Milky Way and harbors a 2.5-billion-solar-mass central black hole that is 1,000 times more massive than the black hole in the Milky Way. But the innocuous-looking galaxy, also known as 3C 348, has long been known as the brightest radio-emitting object in the constellation Hercules. Emitting nearly a billion times more power in radio wavelengths than our Sun, the galaxy is one of the brightest extragalactic radio sources in the entire sky.

The VLA radio data reveal enormous, optically invisible jets that, at one-and-a-half million light-years long, dwarf the visible galaxy from which they emerge. The jets are very-high-energy plasma beams, subatomic particles and magnetic fields shot at nearly the speed of light from the vicinity of the black hole. The outer portions of both jets show unusual ring-like structures suggesting a history of multiple outbursts from the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy.

The innermost parts of the jets are not visible because of the extreme velocity of the material; relativistic effects confine all of the light to a narrow cone aligned to the jets, so the light does not reach us. Far from the galaxy, the jets become unstable and break up into rings and wisps.

The entire radio source is surrounded by a very hot, X-ray-emitting cloud of gas, not seen in this optical-radio composite.

Parenting4Tomorrow: Baby Boomer Family Life

The first of the baby boomers are getting a lot of press lately as they?turn 60.?Researchers have been exploring how this large generation impacts not only our political and cultural climate, but our families as well.

First, boomers have paved the way to more diverse family lives. They have "delayed marriage to a degree never recorded in the United States" and, as young adults, were more likely than any other generation to leave home and set up their own households before marriage. They are also more likely to "live together" outside of marriage. So many boomer couples have done this that we tend to forget how rare and frowned-upon this once was.

Second, boomers have looked for marriage based on a strong emotional bond and room for each person to develop as an individual. These demands on married life can make it unstable. Boomers' high rates of divorce and common remarriage have reinforced a family pattern of "serial monogamy."

Third, boomers have transformed family roles and relationships: "Boomer women have redefined the role of mother to 'working mother' by combining motherhood with work outside the home". Fathers have also become more involved in family life, spending more time with their children and in sharing the housework.

Because these arrangements and roles are new, boomers have had to develop their own ways of doing things and, some suggest, "have often been confused by their own lives". But boomers really are paving the way for new ways of family life in the larger U.S. society.

HyTAQ hybrid quadrotor robot travels by air and land, leaves us no place to hide (video)

HyTAQ hybrid quadrotor robot travels by air and land, leaves us no place to hide video

Few robots can travel gracefully through more than one medium; more often than not, they're either strictly airborne or tied to the ground. The Illinois Institute of Technology's HyTAQ quadrotor doesn't abide by these arbitrary limits. The hybrid machine, designed by Arash Kalantari and Matthew Spenko, uses the same actuators to drive both its flight as well as a surrounding cage for rolling along on the ground, quickly switching between the two methods. It's clearly adaptable, but using the one system also provides large power advantages over a traditional quadrotor, Spenko tells us. While HyTAQ's battery lasts only for 5 minutes and 1,969 feet of pure flight, that jumps to 27 minutes and 7,874 feet when the robot can use a smooth floor instead -- and of course, it can hop over ground obstacles altogether instead of making a detour. The range of the robot and its pilot are the main limiting factors, but the patent process is already underway with hopes of winning commercial deals. We're both excited and worried as a result; as wonderfully flexible as HyTAQ is, widescale adoption could lead to especially relentless robots during the inevitable takeover.

Windows with Energy Efficiency in Mind

This is another installment in our series called Energy-Efficient Windows 101 made possible by Marvin Windows and Doors. In our first article of the series, I discussed some window basics and how to read a home window label. ?Now I want to discuss more product options available for your energy-efficient windows. ?When you buy Marvin windows, you?ll have the opportunity to decide how many panes you need and which glazing and gas options can contribute towards your home performance goals and well as maximize your comfort.

Dual- or Triple-Pane Windows

Marvin has window products with two or three panes of glass. ?Triple-pane, or tripane, windows are usually thicker, heavier, and have a lower U-factor and are attractive for northern climates.?That said, dual-pane windows are the most common and perform well. Your local dealer can help you select the right coatings for your climate; for example, some coatings are more ideal for the north while others for southern climate zones.

Insulating Glass Glazing Options

Marvin can cover glass panes with a thin layer of metallic material to improve the energy performance of the window. ?Specifically, low-emissivity, also LoE or Low-E, coatings on the glass surface and gaps between each pane can be used to block heat transfer through a window. ?The following coatings are available, depending on window and door needs:

Lo?-180? ? a single metallic coating blocks heat loss to the outside and reflects heat back inside a home. ?This coating is used when a high SGHC is needed, such as in northern climates.

Lo?2-272? ? a double metallic coating on the inside glass surface reflects heat into a room and rejects the warmth in the summer. ?This coating is better at reducing heat loss than the?Lo?-180 and may be suitable in all climates except the Southern zone of Energy Star.

Lo?3-366? ? a triple metallic coating of silver which provides a lower U-factor and lower SHGC than the other two coatings. ?This option is recommended in areas with intense sun and high cooling costs.

Insulating Gases Between Panes

In addition, Marvin can inject gases between panes to improve window performance. ?Standard windows have argon to increase energy efficiency, while a blend of krypton, argon, and air is available in tripane products for enhanced performance in northern climates.

Wood/Aluminum Frame Options

Marvin offers wood interior or exterior, as well as durable extruded aluminum exterior option.

Additional Window Options

A couple of other options merit a quick mention as well. Marvin offers glass from Cardinal, whose designs prevent heat loss around the window perimeter. Marvin also offers an Energy Panel, which is a removable exterior glass panel with glazing that can be used to improve the performance of single-glazing wood windows.

Marvin has a fall energy efficiency program with the Smart Performance Promotion giving one lucky homeowner $5,000 toward the purchase of new Marvin windows and doors. In connection with the promotion, Marvin has a collection of energy efficiency and other home improvement tips from Lou Manfredini, a homebuilder, contributor to the Today Show, and host of HouseSmarts TV.

PSA: Nexus 4 returns to Google Play at 3PM ET (update)

PSA Nexus 4 returns to Google Play at 3PM ET

Google's been emailing some good news for those that didn't snatch up its new smartphone within minutes of its online launch a few weeks back. Anyone that asked to be kept up-to-date with Nexus 4 news has been told that new phone stock will be available starting at 3PM ET (Noon PT) -- for US customers only. We've also heard rumors that customers will be limited to ordering up to two phones each, but at these prices, there's likely to be plenty of online traffic jostling for this 4.7-inch slab.

Update: As of 3:08PM ET, it looks as if the Nexus 4 is sold out. These games are no fun, now are they?

Update 2: Google has just posted this update: "Google Play is currently experiencing very high traffic. Nexus 4 is not sold out and will still be available for purchase. Please try again shortly. Thank you for your patience." So, keep trying, we wish you luck, and let us know how you get on in comments!

4 Convicted In $154M Medical Insurance Fraud Scheme ? CBS Los ...

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) ? An Orange County jury Monday returned guilty verdicts for four people for their roles in a $154 million insurance fraud scheme.

KNX 1070?s Vytas Safronikas reports the defendants were accused of recruiting nearly 3,000 people nationwide to participate in unneeded medical tests in order to defraud insurance companies.

The alleged scheme revolved around employees and affiliates of Unity Outpatient Surgery Center in Buena Park, including the facility?s office manager, 66-year-old Rosalinda Rodriguez Landon; suspended attorney Roy Chester Dickson, 64; accountant Andrew Robert Harnen, 58; and administrator Dee Francis, 62.

The 24 guilty verdicts were reached last week, but Orange County Superior Court Judge Thomas Goethals delayed the readings until after the Thanksgiving holiday.

Deputy District Attorney Bill Overtoom said the defendants created shell corporations to avoid paying as much as $9.3 million in taxes.

Landon?s attorney, Roger Sheaks, said his client acted in good faith and did not intend to skirt any tax liability.

?There?s a provision in the law for a good faith defense in this case, and I believe the evidence supported that,? Sheaks said.

Francis is accused of failing to report $3.55 million in income, while Harnen did not report $4.97 million, according to Overtoom. Dickson was accused of not reporting $489,000.

A second phase of the case is expected to go to trial sometime next year.

(AP) ? Tourists and locals flocked to Southfork Ranch on Saturday, bringing flowers in memory of Larry Hagman, who played the infamous J.R. Ewing on the TV show "Dallas."

Hagman died in Dallas on Friday at age 81 due to complications from his battle with cancer.

Southfork, a ranch north of Dallas, was known to millions of viewers as the Ewing family home. Exterior shots of the house and pool were shown when the series aired from 1978 to 1991, although the show wasn't filmed there.

The ranch has been open for tours since the mid-1980s, and now sees more than 100,000 visitors each year. Each room of the house has a theme for each character.

On Saturday, J.R. Ewing's room had flowers and a card for tourists to sign.

"Today is about Larry Hagman and his family," said Janna Timm, a Southfork Ranch & Hotel spokeswoman. "He was such a wonderful person, and we will really miss him."

"Dallas" was recently revived on TNT this summer, and all of the scenes were filmed at Southfork or other places in the Dallas area. Hagman had revised his role as the scheming oilman who would even double-cross his own son.

Linda Sproule of Peterborough, Ontario, had been traveling through the U.S. the past couple of weeks and heard about Hagman's death Friday while in Dallas. She said she didn't know where Southfork was but wanted to come because she was a fan of the show in the 1980s.

"I remember on Friday nights we watched it, and J.R. was bigger than life in some ways," she said after taking the Southfork tour Saturday morning. "This ranch is beautiful. Being here is kind of emotional in a way."

Barbara Quinones and her husband were in town for their daughter's soccer tournament and had already planned to visit Southfork when they heard news of Hagman's death.

"We loved him because he was so ruthless," said Quinones, of Albuquerque, N.M. "This is a sad day, but I'm glad we're here."

Some of the show's stars, including Hagman, came to Southfork for the series' 25th anniversary. The Fort Worth-born actor also had visited several times before the show was revived.

"He was definitely a gentleman, a class act," said Jim Gomes, vice president of resorts at Southfork Ranch & Hotel. "He loved the fans as much as they loved him."

Hostess says talks to stave off shutdown fail

(AP) ? Hostess Brands Inc. lived to die another day.

The maker of Twinkies and Ding Dongs said late Tuesday that it failed to reach an agreement with its second-biggest union. As a result, Hostess plans to continue with a hearing on Wednesday in which a bankruptcy court judge in White Plains, N.Y., will decide if the company can shutter its operations.

The renewed talks between Hostess and The Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union came after the company declared last week that it would move to wind down its business and start selling off its assets in bankruptcy court. The company cited a crippling strike that was started on Nov. 9 by the union, which represents 30 percent of Hostess workers.

After making its case to liquidate on Monday, the bankruptcy court judge noted that the two sides hadn't yet tried resolving their differences through private mediation. The judge noted that 18,000 jobs were on the line and urged the company and union to try to resolve their differences. Both sides agreed to hold mediation proceedings on Tuesday.

In a statement late Tuesday, Hostess said it would not comment on the breakdown in talks other than to say that mediation "was unsuccessful." There was no immediate comment from the bakers union.

Hostess shut down its three dozen plants late last week after it said the strike by the bakers union hurt its ability to maintain normal production. The union says the company's demise was the result of years of mismanagement, however, and that workers have already given steep concessions over the years.

Hostess, weighed down by management turmoil, rising labor costs and Americans' changing tastes, is making its second trip through Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring. The company, based in Irving, Texas, had brought on CEO Gregory Rayburn as a restructuring expert in part to renegotiate its contract with labor unions.

The company reached an agreement with its biggest union, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, on a contract that dramatically reduced pension contributions, as well as slashing wages and health benefits. But the company said the bakers union stopped returning its calls about a month ago.

The Teamsters urged the smaller union to hold a secret ballot on whether members wanted to continue striking. Many workers in the bakers union decided to cross picket lines last week but Hostess said it wasn't enough to keep operations at normal levels.

Teamsters General Secretary Ken Hall said the failure of the mediation talks Tuesday and the likely shuttering of the company was a "tragic outcome" for Hostess workers.

Rayburn said that Hostess was already operating on razor thin margins and that the strike was the final blow. The bakers union meanwhile pointed to the steep raises executives were given last year as the company was spiraling down toward bankruptcy.

The company's announcement last week that it would move to liquidate prompted a rush on Hostess treats across the country, with many businesses selling out of Twinkies within hours.

Even if Hostess goes out of business, its popular brands will likely find a second life after being snapped up by buyers. The company says several potential buyers have expressed interest in the brands. Although Hostess' sales have been declining in recent years, the company still does about $2.5 billion in business each year. Twinkies alone brought in $68 million so far this year.

Presentz and Mozilla?s Popcorn: 2 Platforms For Creating Video Slide Shows From Vimeo, YouTube, SlideShare And More

PresentzMaker2The era of connected data services continues to unfold with the advent of emerging platforms such as Presentz, an open-source slide show offering for people to mashup videos, images and other media from YouTube, Vimeo, SlideShare and other providers. The service syncs video with a slide deck so people can follow a recorded conference talk and see the slides at the same time. Presentz has been in development for more than a year but recently has had more attention. This is in part due to the breadth of applications available that can be mashed up and the realization that it’s unncessary to load all your data onto one platform and use the tools that the vendor provides. Plus, it’s free to use and open-source. At the heart of Presentz is the open-source JavaScript library that syncs the video and the slides. Users add links to their videos and slide decks to the form on the Presentz website. It supports YouTube and Vimeo for video. SlideShare, LibreOffice and SpeakerDeck are the slide-show presentation services that a user can pull. The video and slides render to the site. Here I’ve pulled an unrelated video and slide deck together to show how Presentz works. Here’s how it looks when finished: Most alternatives to Presentz have a centralized approach: you give them your video or audio and slides, you use their tools to mix them, and they will publish and host the result. Presentz just pulls the video and slides from third parties. Presentz is similar to Mozilla’s PopcornMaker, which is richer in scope but not as focused as what you get with Presentz. Mozilla describes Popcorn as a platform to enhance, remix and share web video. It’s a browser-based platform with the capability to combine video and audio with text, links, maps, pictures and live feeds. The biggest difference between Presentz and Popcorn are the use cases. Popcorn is a remix servicw that it describes as a storytelling platform. Presentz is best for conferences and presentations. Both are worth a look.

Ex-SAC manager charged in $276 million insider scheme

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. prosecutors on Tuesday charged a former SAC Capital employee with insider trading in a series of transactions that hedge fund titan Steven A. Cohen had personally signed off on.

In what they called "the most lucrative" insider-trading scheme ever, prosecutors alleged that Mathew Martoma helped Cohen's firm avoid losses and reap profits totaling $276 million in the summer of 2008 by using insider tips he got from a doctor about Elan Corp and Wyeth LLC.

Martoma is the fifth person associated with SAC Capital, one of the most widely followed and influential hedge funds, to be charged with insider trading in either a criminal or civil proceeding. He had worked for a unit of SAC Capital called CR Intrinsic Investors in Stamford, Connecticut until 2010.

The criminal complaint against Martoma, while not mentioning Cohen by name, refers to him as the "owner" of the hedge fund and makes clear that Cohen and Martoma talked often about the fund's trading in shares of Elan and Wyeth. The court papers do not indicate that Cohen had knowledge of how Martoma obtained his information.

Martoma's lawyer, Charles Stillman, said his client was an "exceptional portfolio manager" and he is confident Martoma will be exonerated.

A spokesman for SAC Capital said "Mr. Cohen and SAC are confident that they have acted appropriately and will continue to cooperate with the government's inquiry".

The charges against Martoma stem from the U.S. government's long-running investigation into improper trading in the $2 trillion hedge fund industry, which the Federal Bureau of Investigation has called, Operation Perfect Hedge.

To date, the investigation has led to more than 50 convictions with the most notable ones being former Galleon founder Raj Rajaratnam and former Goldman Sachs Group director Rajat Gupta.

Slowly, U.S. authorities have been filing charges and winning convictions against lower-level traders and analysts who once worked for Cohen, one of the hedge fund industry's most successful and best-known traders.

The latest charges come at a time when authorities are stepping up pressure on Cohen and his hedge fund. This summer, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission took a deposition from Cohen as part of its ongoing insider trading investigation. It is not clear what the SEC asked Cohen about.

Recently, a top deputy of Cohen's, Michael Steinberg, was named as an unindicted co-conspirator in court documents in a separate insider trading matter.

The $14 billion SAC Capital, which charges some of the highest fees in the industry, is up about 10 percent this year - double the performance of the average U.S. hedge fund.

MAJOR REVERSAL

According to court papers filed on Tuesday, Martoma spoke in July 2008 to the "hedge fund owner" and recommended selling shares of Elan and Wyeth before a negative announcement on clinical trial results for an Alzheimer's drug jointly developed by the two companies.

CR Intrinsic had initially taken long positions in Elan and Wyeth stocks before reversing itself over the course of one week, selling some stock and building up massive short positions that accounted for one fifth of all trading in Elan, federal prosecutors said.

The criminal complaint filed by federal prosecutors and a related civil lawsuit filed by the SEC contend Martoma got insider information from a doctor, Sidney Gilman, who once worked as a consultant for a so-called expert network. Hedge funds use such networks to gain insight into various industries.

Gilman, an 80-year old neurology professor at the University of Michigan, is serving as a confidential cooperating witness in the criminal case.

"Dr. Gilman is cooperating with the SEC and we expect to settle that case in short order," said Gilman's lawyer Mark Mukasey, a partner at Bracewell & Giuliani.

The name of the expert network firm does not appear in the court documents. A disclosure attached to a paper by Gilman in the medical journal Neurology lists him as a consultant for the Gerson Lehrman Group.

A spokesman for GLG declined to comment.

The court papers describe phone calls in which Gilman shared detailed information about the Alzheimer's drug's clinical trial. Gilman was chair of a committee to monitor patients' safety during the trial.

According to the criminal complaint, Gilman scheduled meetings and phone calls with Martoma that allowed him to pass on new information about the trial quickly after receiving it. He was initially positive about the drug; as a result Martoma vigorously bought shares of Elan and Wyeth.

The complaint says the hedge fund owner defended Martoma against other people inside SAC Capital who criticized the large position.

After Gilman learned the drug trial results were mostly negative, a trader for CR Intrinsic unwound its positions and made a move into options that would pay off if the stocks fell.

"By cultivating and corrupting a doctor who had access to secret drug data, portfolio manager Mathew Martoma and his hedge fund benefitted from what might be the most lucrative inside tip of all time," Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara told reporters on Tuesday, in discussing the charges.

FIFTH FORMER SAC TRADER

The charges against Martoma are the latest in a string of insider trading allegations to be leveled against former top traders and analysts who worked at SAC Capital.

A person familiar with SAC Capital said Martoma, an alumnus of the Stanford Graduate School of Business in California, sat near Cohen at SAC Capital's large trading floor in Stamford, Connecticut.

Two former traders, Noah Freeman and Donald Longueuil, pleaded guilty to insider trading charges last year. Jon Horvath, a former analyst at a division of SAC pleaded guilty to insider trading charges in September.

Another former SAC Capital employee, Jonathan Hollander, settled civil charges of insider trading last year with the SEC.

Martoma was arrested on Tuesday morning in Boca Raton, Florida, according to a Federal Bureau of Investigation spokesman.

Grief and Faith - Catholic Mothers Online

My uncle, my?Dad?s brother, passed away recently.? Although he had health problems in recent years, his death at the age of 55 was still unexpected.

There is something completely inevitable about death ? it will come ? and yet it still feels so abrupt, so sudden, so jarring when it happens.? When I got the call on a Monday morning a surge of emotion coursed through me.? All day I felt highs and lows.? I had an overwhelming need for the world to stop.? Just for a moment, I needed it to stop.? But the world doesn?t stop.

Questions ran through my mind.? Thoughts about life and death hit me hard, like I had been punched in the gut.? Except for my Mom?s brother who passed away when I was a freshman in high school, this was the only other person close to me who had passed away.? I was feeling it for the first time as a wife, as a mother ? as an adult.? Death was suddenly personal ? so very, very real.

At first glance I couldn?t figure it out.? I didn?t have many opportunities to spend time with my uncle.? He had never married and for my childhood he lived some distance away so I rarely saw him.? But my siblings and I would always write him letters and share our childish dreams and musings.?

That all changed when, nearly seven years ago, my uncle came to live at my parent?s house.? His health had declined?and my parents decided to?open their home to him.? At the time, I was living at home only weeks away from getting married.? It was a special time.? We shared a lot of laughs.? He became friends with my fiance.? He was there at my wedding ? a quiet presence because he never wanted to be the center of attention.? He visited us at our first home.? And a few months later he was there when we announced to my parents they were going to be grandparents again.?

As I grieved I began to realize that, although always an unassuming presence, my uncle had quietly weaved himself into the fabric of my life.?? On a deeper level, I was realizing that sometimes you don?t know just how much you love someone until they are gone.

On Wednesday I packed our bags and my three children and I drove the more than six hours to the?Missouri Ozarks to be among family.? As the road began to dip and rise I sensed a powerful few days ahead of me.? Normally my trips to the Ozarks were for vacations and family reunions ? always joyful times.? This time, for the first time, it was going to be different.? As a family we could celebrate together, but could we grieve?

I never fully grasped the importance of the Catholic Faith in the grief cycle.? It was a vague notion.? Praying for the dead and burying the dead are works of mercy, but what does that mean in reality?? It means tearful goodbyes with your aunt at your side.? It means a?Grandpa who acknowledges that he cries easily too.? It?s a hug at the right moment.? It?s sharing happy stories.? It?s a family gathered at visitation to pray the Glorious Mysteries of the rosary.? It?s the hopeful celebration of Holy Mass.? It?s a bugle playing?TAPS and a flag presented to a grieving mother.? It?s the rich celebration of life.? It?s being hopeful in the midst of tremendous pain. ?It?s a family gathered together in faith sending a son, a brother, an uncle to his final resting place.?

Yet in the midst of the grieving and the unexpected deepening of my own faith, I still felt the need for the world to stop ? if only for a moment.? And then it happened, when I least expected it and from a seemingly ordinary gesture, the world stopped.? It was on Friday morning as we filed down the road to the Church and then to the cemetery.? Cars began to stop.? People got out.? A gentleman raised a salute.? They were stopping for someone they had never met; someone they never knew.?

It was a simple gesture; something I had personally done many times before merely out of habit, even tradition.? It was suddenly a deeply moving and powerful gesture, not only for the deceased but for the family and friends still living and grieving.? It was as if the whole world stood still to acknowledge a life ? his life.? And that?s when I knew I could begin to let go.

May he rest in peace.? May all the faithful departed rest in peace.

Sarah considers it a blessing that she is a wife, mother, daughter, granddaughter, sister, and niece.? She writes at The Happy, Resourceful Home.

Obama Defends Myanmar Visit, 'Not An Endorsement'

BANGKOK, Thailand - President Obama today defended his decision to visit Myanmar against critics who say the trip is premature, saying it's "an acknowledgement" of the country's democratic progress but not "an endorsement."

"I don't think anybody's under any illusion that Burma has arrived, that they're where they need to be," Obama said at a joint press conference with Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. "On the other hand, if we waited to engage until they had achieved a perfect democracy, my suspicion is we'd be waiting an awful long time."

"One of the goals of this trip is to highlight the progress that has been made but also to give voice to the much greater progress that needs to be made in the future," he said.

Critics, however, say the president's visit comes too soon, that reforms are incomplete and human rights abuses still continue.

On Monday Obama will become the first president to visit Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, as it emerges from five decades of military rule. The visit gives the president an opportunity to "lock-in" the modest democratic reforms that the government has made and showcase one of the foreign policy accomplishments of his first term.

"This is not an endorsement of the Burmese government. This is an acknowledgement that there is a process underway inside that country that even a year and a half, two years ago, nobody foresaw," he explained.

Obama will also meet with reformist President Thein Sein and fellow Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, two of the key forces behind the diplomatic movement in the long-isolated country.

"President Sein is taking steps that move us in a better direction," Obama said. "You have Aung San Suu Kyi now an elected member of parliament. You've seen political prisoners released. There is an articulated commitment to further political reforms."

?s eurozone economy shrinks, gov't debt loads grow

DAVID McHUGH,AP Business Writer

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) ? Europe's government-debt crisis is no longer panicking financial markets. But it won't end until the region's economy starts growing strongly again. And that will be a while. The economy of the 17 countries that use the euro has shrunk for two straight quarters ? a common definition of a recession ? and analysts forecast little or no growth until 2014. Without growth, there won't be enough tax revenue to help countries like Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal narrow their deficits and slow the expansion of their debts. Their debt burdens as a percentage of economic output, a key measure of fiscal health, look worse by the day. The eurozone's combined debts are equal to about 93 percent of the region's gross domestic product this year and that figure is forecast to rise to peak at 94.5 percent next year. In 2009, the eurozone's debt-to-GDP ratio was 80 percent. A ratio above 90 percent is generally considered high and can put pressure on governments' borrowing costs. "The worrying thing about the projections is, the peak seems to keep moving," says Raoul Ruparel of the Open Europe think tank. The panic in European financial markets has eased in recent months largely because of aggressive action by the European Central Bank. The ECB said on Sept. 6 that it was willing to buy unlimited amounts of government bonds issued by countries struggling to pay their debts. That pledge

Salvador Dali Etching Donated Anonymously to Goodwill in Washington State

Goodwill is auctioning the Dali on its website until Monday: bidding is now $10k+

Michael Martinez CNN

(CNN) -- When an anonymous donor gave art to the Goodwill as an early holiday gift this month, the staff thought it was junk.

?

"Across the board they thought it was ugly," said Shea Munroe, who sorts the art and collectibles donated at Goodwill Industries in Federal Way, Washington.

Co-workers told her: "What is that? And why would anybody want that?"

The art is actually a Salvador Dali original, by the master surrealist who in his day relished the role of public provocateur with his mind-bending imagery.

The work is a colored etching, and the framed piece even features the familiar Dali motif of a melting watch, placed on the wrist of a pointing hand.

Its title is "Reflection" or "Reflections," from "The Cycles of Life Suite," and the art is signed by Dali and numbered "126/150." The work is also labeled as an "etching and photolithography from collage."

Munroe was familiar with Dali, and she researched the work and its attached letter of authenticity.

She confirmed she had something special, though several co-workers knew nothing of the surrealist, not even his famously flamboyant moustache.

"This is probably the real deal," Munroe said of her discovery of the Dali work. "The manager knew who he was right away, and we were both really excited."

Goodwill is now auctioning the art on its website. As of late Friday afternoon, the bidding reached $10,505. Goodwill has noted that the artwork's paper "has some warping, as if from humidity," with some discolored speckling to one part of the matting and a few deep scratches and scuffs to the glass and frame, the website says.

The online auction ends Monday at 7:30 p.m. PST.

Goodwill doesn't know the donor, who managed to sneak away during a busy time at the drop-off facility, Munroe said.?

But the donor kept intact the back of the frame, which contained an envelope with a certificate of authenticity and registration number from a defunct gallery in North Hollywood, Ca.

An appraiser retained by Goodwill also confirmed the authenticity of the Dali, and the charitable organization also ensured the art wasn't stolen, said Amanda Bedell, spokeswoman for Goodwill in Tacoma, Wash. The nonprofit provides employment and training programs to people with disabilities and disadvantages, and the group sells donated goods in more than 2,600 stores.

Goodwill held on to the Dali for a week in case someone claimed it was accidentally donated, Bedell said.

"We don't know the background of what the circumstances were," Bedell said of the donation. "It's a steady stream of people coming in. It's not necessarily documented what every person comes in with."

About 74 million people in the United States and Canada donate annually to Goodwill, Bedell said.

"We have a very busy donation door, and we have several people who work that door," Munroe said, explaining how the donor was able to remain unknown.

When a signed piece of art arrives at a donation center, Goodwill sets it aside for special review, Munroe said.

Most donated goods are sold at Goodwill stores, but prizes such as the Dali are auctioned online -- to maximize their value, said Munroe, who works for Goodwill's online department.

The Dali is the highlight of her past six years of working for the nonprofit, in addition to her two years of service in the 1970s, she said.?

Until this month, the biggest donations she oversaw were professional 35-mm cameras that fetched $8,400 on Goodwill's auction website, she said.

To the anonymous donor, Munroe, 58, offered a message: "I would say thank you for helping us with our mission because we have a lot of programs that put people to work, and it's people right here in the communities."

The bidding for the Dali piece is still short of the most prized art auctioned by Goodwill: A Frank Weston Benson oil painting, dated 1924 and also donated anonymously, was sold online by Goodwill in 2006 for $165,002.
